FAQ - Licensed trade insurance

Here are some of the questions we are most frequently asked about licensed trade insurance. If you can't find an answer to your question here, please call 0800 731 7795 and speak to a member of our team.

What might I need to insure under a licensed trade policy?

  • Third party accidents
  • Damage to buildings through fires, floods, storms and building collapse (because of impact or subsidence)
  • Damage to all bar and kitchen equipment
  • Damage to all fixtures and fittings
  • All thefts, including cash and property, within specified policy limits
  • Loss of earnings
  • Legal liability and expenses
  • Personal accident
  • You and your family's personal contents

Should I make an inventory of the items within my premises?

You should make an inventory of everything in your pub and specify to your insurers any high value items that may need additional cover. Give each item a value (you can check values though catalogues and on the internet) and make sure that the total sum insured will cover the cost of their replacement.

What are the most important things I need to do once I have the policy documents?

It is vital to look at the small print in any policy and make sure your broker, or whoever sells you your insurance, explains what is and isn't covered. Most policies will provide 'new-for-old cover', which reinstates each item as if it were new. The amounts you insure for must represent the full replacement cost on this basis. Indemnity only cover may be available.

Do I need employers' liability insurance?

In the UK, it is usually against the law to trade without employer's liability insurance if you have staff - whether those staff are full-time, part-time, casual, permanent or temporary. You could be fined up to £2,500 for each day you do not have this cover in place by the Health and Safety Executive.

What is public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance covers you for any damages that a member of the public may be awarded as a result of injury or damage to them, or their property, in the course of your business. It is not a legal requirement to have this cover, but it will prevent you from suffering financial burden at the same time as the ordeal of a court case following a claim. Most of our products automatically include this.
